Central London Aquarists Society – January 2010 meeting

Went yesterday to the Central London Aquarists Society (http://clas.plastic-creep.net) monthly meeting, and was pleasantly surprised.

I am not one for meetings, and actually struggle to meet new people, but I thought that it would be a good idea to meet other aquarists in London, to exchange ideas, learn new things, and see new ways to keep fish.

The meeting was at Ricky’s home, near Victoria. As the CLAS is rather new, there still isn’t that many members, so at the meeting there were only five of us; Erick, Cristina and her boyfriend, me and Ricky.

We took biscuits, Ricky provided the tea and coffee, and we even took items to share and exchange.

I took a large Amazon Sword, it had grown too large for my Rio 125, a bottle full of shrimp, as I just got too many, and even took a sample of hanging planters. Not as nice as the ones that Riparium Supply sells, but they do the job, at least until Riparium Supply starts selling his own on the UK.

I learnt a lot about Discus and mosses, as Ricky seems to have enough experience on those, and a new way to use Coco coir, as plant substrate, Cristina’s idea may just be perfect for small tanks, or semi emerged setups.

Ricky was a great host, and he was kind enough to share some of his baby Vallisneria and extra moss.

If you are in London, and like aquariums then please go to http://clas.plastic-creep.net and join the forum, you will not regret it.

Container Water Gardens

Lot’s of talk about Paludariums, Ripariums and Terrariums, but it seems that we are just rediscovering what has been done in Far East for thousands of years.

Some of the most amazing gardens seen are lotus gardens, which use large containers to house the lotus tubers..

Not everybody has space on the garden to have a pond, but get a large terracotta pot; some border plants, a cheap water pump and you can have a small corner of calm and tranquility on your small garden, terrace, or even inside the house.

You don’t have to limit yourself to just plants; you can also have fish, as some are easy to keep on cold water.

Container gardens are also a cheap to put together, and relatively maintenance free, just top with water go on holidays and they are still looking great when you come back.

To get the containers, go to EBay, B&Q, or DYI shops, look for anything between 18in to 20in tall by 10in deep, ensure that it is waterproof. The plants you can get them mail order, or buy at a Garden Centre. Look at my other posts about plants that you can use emersed, and you will have a starting point.

The rule is experiment, experiment, experiment. Regarding to using fish, I would stick to goldfish, as you will need to keep the mosquito larvae at a check, but if the water garden is to be at home, I would just use plants, but there are a number of fish that you can use.

Just remember that fish will need more care, than just the plants.

I recommend the book Water Gardening In Containers: Small Ponds Indoors & Out, I have a copy and although it isn’t a large book, it has very useful information.

Some pics on the web to give you an idea:

Have Java Fern plantlets, pieces of wood and a empty container?

Have some Java Fern plantlets arround?

Get some pieces of wood, some Java Fern plantlets, add some water and place  it on the kitchen windowsill.

I got one of those hermetic tubs sold at ikea, and a old bottle of Chivas Regal,  added some liquid carbon, then close it and see if it grows.

Change the water twice a week, or more if it starts to smell, but as it is as enclosed environement it should be ok.

Plants to use on a Paludarium or Riparium

As the use of Paludariums, Vivariums and now Ripariums is growing, the usual plants that we source do not apply anymore.

We now need to look for plants that although they like wet ground, they can actually live with the leaves outside the water.

I have used hanging planters purchased in the UK, although there is a online shop that sells them in the US, if you live on that side of the pond.

However, it is very easy to buy hanging planters on the high street, you just need to use imagination.

I bought my planters on www.beanpod.net, removed the bottom part, and just filled with clay balls, cocopeat and laterite soil, which you can buy at any pet shop.

You can also find planters on the net, look for “Powerlock shower caddy”, they sell for around £10, but if you buy in bulk you can get them for close to £5.

Also Blisshome is a good place to buy them, look on http://www.blisshome.co.uk/products.asp?c=85.

I will list below some of the plants I have used on my paludarium/riparium.

1. Anubias
Anubias is a genus of aquatic and semi-aquatic flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to tropical central and western Africa. They primarily grow in rivers and streams, but can also be found in marshes.

As the plant grows in marshes and bogs, this plant is one of my favorite to use on a paludarium/riparium.

There is a range of plants on the Anubias family, but the easiest to find on the pet shops are the Anubias barteri var. nana, Anubias barteri var. barteri and Anubias barteri var. angustifolia.

The best way to have them on a tank is to either tied them to a piece of wood, or floating foam.

Their only requirement is that they need to have the leaves moist, so if you place a airstone beneath them, or a spray bar above, there will no issue.

2. Java Fern
The Java fern (Microsorum pteropus) is definitely one of the plants to have on a paludarium/riparium, the plant will adapt very well to growing emmersed, attached to rock or wood.

The plant is so flexible that can be kept on any type of water, inclusive brackish.

3. Cryptocorynes
The Cryptocorynes species is a well know aquarium plant, what most people do not know is that they are very easy to use on a paludarium/riparium.

They are also easy to flower above the water, as they do so in their natural habitats, where they grow above the water during the summer months.

The most common Cryptocorynes to find on pet shop or online retailer are:
Cryptocoryne parva
Cryptocoryne beckettii ”petchii”
Cryptocoryne wendtii ”green”
Cryptocoryne wendtii ”brown”
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Mi Oya’
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Tropica’
Cryptocoryne undulata ”broad leaves”
Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia
Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae
Cryptocoryne diverse

As long as they have their roots wet, the plants will do good.

4. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
A plant that is easy to keep and very easy to find , as it is often sold as a house plant.

They do not need a lot of light, and in their natural habitat grow on very wet ground, in Central and South American rainforests.

5. Lobelia species
All Lobelias would do good on a paludarium/riparium. Although they are seen on ponds, as marginal plants, and die during winter, on a paludarium/riparium with good lighting they would flower.

Look for Lobelia Kalmii and Lobelia siphilitica, they worked for me on a tall tank with just 15cm of water on the bottom and a pump forcing water up a spray bar.

Lobelia Cardinalis is easy to find on pet shops, and looks great with the scarlet leaves.

6. Calla Lily (Zantedeschia)
A hard plant to get right on the paludarium/riparium, but when it grows, the results are amazing, especially if the tank is open, or tall.

Plant the tubers in early fall, setting them 3 inches deep in the potting mixture. Keep barely damp until the first shoot appears, then keep moist and feed monthly with a bulb fertilizer.

Most callas need a period of dormancy after flowering. Gradually withhold water until the leaves wither away, then start plants into growth again later by moistening the soil.

By using pots, or hanging planters, you can have lilies all year around, giving color to your tank.

7. Acorus species
All Acorus will be good for a paludarium/riparium, but my favourite is the Acorus gramineus ‘Variegatus’, it grows to around 20cm tall, so it is perfect for the back of the tank, or to hide tubes, etc.

There are various cultivars; Ogon, Variegatus, Minimus aureus. They have different colors and sizes, so it is a good plant to mix and match and give that riverside look to a paludarium/riparium.

8. Syngonium
A house plant often sold as an aquarium plant, is a family composed of over 30 species, all native to tropical rain forests.

Syngonium podophyllum is the most commonly cultivated species, so it is a easy plant to find, and suitable for a paludarium/riparium. It is also known as Goosefoot.

All parts of the plant are poisonous and cause severe mouth pain if eaten

Some of the species are listed below:
Syngonium angustatum
Syngonium angustifolium
Syngonium armigerum
Syngonium atrovirens
Syngonium auritum
Syngonium chiapense
Syngonium chocoanum
Syngonium crassifolium
Syngonium dodsonianum
Syngonium erythrophyllum
Syngonium foreroanum
Syngonium gentryanum
Syngonium glaucopetiolatum
Syngonium harlingianum
Syngonium hastiferum
Syngonium hastifolium
Syngonium hoffmannii

9. Dracaena species
Another plant that is often sold as an aquarium plant, only to die after a couple of weeks and pollute the water.

There are a variety of Dracaenas, with green and white leave, yellow and green, and even pink/purple and green leaves.

The soil they are planted on needs to be moist but not water logged, and they do not need a lot of light.

Just mist the leaves once a day with either a spray bottle or use a spray bar attached to a pump.

10. Alternanthera species
There are a variety of species, but the easiest to find it the Alternanthera Sessilis, an aquatic plant known by several common names, including sessile joyweed and dwarf copperleaf. It is used as an aquarium plant, but it will not last long submerged.

The most beautiful of the Alternantheras, is the Alternanthera reineckii ‘Purple’ (lilacina), easy to find on the aquarium trade, as Tropica sells it.

The Alternanthera reineckii does very good trailing just above, either on foam strips, or on hanging planters.

If you need more information please let me know, I will try to help out as much as I can.

Tank planter box… Have you seen one?

Plant box for your fish tank

Plant box for your fish tank

I am becoming more and more enthralled at what one can do with plants and a tank with half water.

I first came across Hydrophytes Blog (http://hydrophytesblog.com/), which is to date one of the best bastions for planted tanks. His photos are well taken and his product is well thought out. A work of art one may say.

I have been trying to find in the UK a product similar to his hanging planter, found only shower cadies that would do the same job, but I am battling with the suction cups.

They do stay on, but I am always worried that they will let the planter drop.

What if instead of suction cups, one would use legs? Like a window sill planter, but on a tank?

What do you think?

HP SIM not starting…. solution below..

These steps solved my issue of:

Then the 3 would cycle again 25 seconds later.

mxpassword is useful:
http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/hpsim/info-library5/mxpassword.1m.html
especially ‘mxpassword -g’ for users with complex password that include double quotes.

mxuser is not useful to solve this situation:
http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/hpsim/info-library5/mxuser.1m.html

Summarized:
The problem is that the user account that installed HP SIM 5 is associated as the account to connect to the SQL server & that account is no longer working. This commonly breaks when the user’s password or the account’s name has been changed. That is why HP SIM should be installed while logged in with the same account that will be its service account. Installing under an equivalent user’s administrator account and then changing the services to run under a different account will be a situation that will break when the user needs to change their password. This situation includes service pack updates to HP SIM.

To fix this change/verify the user account in the database.props file within ‘C:\Program Files\HP\Systems Insight Manager\config’. Look for the field ‘hp.Database.username=’. Change it to the same account that is used to run the ‘HP Systems Insight Manager’ service.
Then use ‘mxpassword -g’ or ‘mxpassword -m -x MxDBUserPassword=”<password of service account>”‘. The point is to change the password to the one of the service account.
Then restart the ‘HP Systems Insight Manager’ service or restart the computer. If you start the service, give it a few minute to start up.

Note: It is a good idea to have your monitoring solution monitor for these events just in case of this situation.
